    There are a number of reasons to have floating plants in a pond. The first, of course, is that when they are in their prime, they are among the more beautiful, and interesting, of all of the plants that are available to pond owners. From the tufty, multicolored mats of Azolla to the magnificent blossoms of Water Hyacinth, this is truly a varied group. Another reason is for algae control. The shade cast by the floating colonies, and the nutrient load that they take from the water, all contribute to the control of many species of algae. At the same time, some species, Azolla and Lemna in particular, actually provide the fish in the pond with a good, nutritious, “home grown” supply of food.

Dark green leaves are arranged in whorls around a narrow stem. The plant will develop thickets in the back of aquariums or on the bottoms of ponds. White flowers are borne on short stems on the water's surface throughout the summer. This plant is a good indicator of the quality of your water. In hard water, for example it will sometimes be covered with calcium deposits. It is a good consumer of nitrate in the water and can grow rapidly to fill any niche. An outstanding oxygenator. Sold in bunches, a bunch consists of 6-8 lengths, 6-8 inches long with growing tips. Can be planted in the pond by putting it in with your waterlilies, lotus or bog plants. It can also be anchored with gravel or small stones in shallow water areas.

A small bright green plant, which consists of a round to ovate leaf and a root. The leaves vary in size according to nutrient supply and are sometimes purple on the underside. Water Lettuce is one of the perennial favorites among pond keepers. Its ability to filter water and its unusual appearance make it a fitting addition to any medium sized to large pond setting. In smaller ponds or barrels it tends to overwhelm its tankmates. Its leaves are thick, fuzzy, and gray-green. The leaves form a rosette on the water surface. The plants produce runners in all directions and eventually form colonies wherever they are able to sit undisturbed. The flowers are insignificant. The entire plant consists only of a tiny green disc or spherical structure. Reproduction is by budding, and although the plant is the smallest flowering plant, it blooms only rarely, even in nature. A good food supplement for herbivorous fish, this plant is capable of forming dense colonies just below the water's surface. It is easy to imagine that it can tolerate moist soil conditions as well.
